Description
Discover the Family Story Hidden in Old Newspapers
Historical newspapers can reveal details that do not appear in census records or vital records.
An obituary might identify children, siblings, parents, residences, occupations, churches, organizations, or burial information.
A marriage announcement may connect two families.
A local article might explain why someone moved, changed occupations, appeared in court, served in the military, participated in community life, or became involved in an event remembered by later generations.
I will search relevant available newspaper and obituary sources for one identified person, family, or defined event and organize the results into a clear, documented findings report.
Depending on the project, research may include:
- obituaries
- death notices
- funeral notices
- marriage announcements
- engagement announcements
- birth notices
- anniversary articles
- social columns
- community news
- legal notices
- probate notices
- business advertisements or announcements
- military mentions
- school or organizational news
- crime or court reporting
- accident reports
- local events
- property or residence mentions
- family reunions
- other historically relevant newspaper references
The goal is not simply to collect clippings.
The goal is to identify what those articles actually tell us about the person or family.

A clear explanation of what the newspaper material contributes to the family history.
Timeline
For Standard and Premium projects, relevant newspaper findings may be organized chronologically where useful.
Evidence Notes
Identification of spelling differences, contradictory information, uncertain identities, or potentially misleading newspaper claims when encountered.
Search Summary
If some or all requested material cannot be located, I will explain the major searches conducted rather than simply returning “not found.”
Recommended Next Steps
Suggestions for additional newspaper searches, historical records, repositories, relatives, or research questions that may move the investigation forward.
What I Need From You
Please provide as much of the following as you know:
- Full name of the person or family you want researched.
- Maiden names, nicknames, middle names, initials, or alternate spellings.
- Approximate birth and death dates.
- Known cities, counties, states, or communities.
- Spouse, parents, siblings, children, or other relatives.
- The specific question you want newspaper research to address.
- Approximate date range for the events you are interested in.
- Existing obituary information, newspaper references, screenshots, family-tree entries, or other records you already possess.
- Newspapers or archives you have already searched, if known.
- Any conflicting family stories or uncertain details you want evaluated.
The more accurately a person can be identified, the more productive a short newspaper research block can be.
What This Service Does Not Include
This service is focused on historical newspaper and obituary research.
It does not include:
- an unlimited search of every newspaper publication
- unlimited family members
- full family-tree construction
- extensive non-newspaper genealogy research
- guaranteed discovery of an obituary or article
- complete transcription of very large numbers of articles
- professional translation of foreign-language newspapers
- DNA or genetic genealogy
- unknown-parentage investigations
- living-person background investigations
- legal heirship research
- citizenship application preparation
- lineage-society certification
- tribal-membership determinations
- physical visits to libraries, archives, or historical societies
- paid repository or archive fees
- third-party researcher costs
- guaranteed historical accuracy of everything printed in a newspaper
Historical newspapers can contain mistakes, misspellings, exaggerated claims, reporting errors, and information supplied by relatives without independent verification.
Newspaper evidence will therefore be treated as evidence to analyze—not automatically as unquestionable fact.
Newspaper Access and Paid Archives
Many historical newspapers are available through free digital archives, libraries, government projects, historical societies, genealogy databases, and other online repositories.
Some publications are available only through paid databases or repositories.
The package price covers the defined research work using sources reasonably available for the project.
If an important source appears to require a separate paid subscription, archive fee, record fee, or other outside expense, I will not incur that cost without your approval.
What Happens if Nothing Is Found?
A newspaper search can be unsuccessful for many reasons.
The relevant newspaper may:
- not have been digitized
- have incomplete surviving issues
- use poor OCR that makes names difficult to search
- spell the person’s name unexpectedly
- publish only a brief notice
- exist behind a restricted or paid archive
- never have reported the event
Your purchase covers a defined research search, not a guaranteed discovery.
If relevant material cannot be located within the purchased scope, you will still receive a summary of the major searches performed and recommendations for the most useful next steps.
Revisions
One clarification/revision is included.
A revision covers correction, clarification, organization, or reasonable adjustment to the delivered findings based on the original research objective.
It does not include additional newspaper searches, another family member, another time period, or a new research question.
What Happens After You Order
- I will contact you by email. I will request the person’s name and name variations, approximate dates, known locations, relatives, relevant events, and any newspaper material or previous searches you already have.
- You provide the available family information. Dates, locations, spouses, parents, children, occupations, and other identifying details can help distinguish the correct person from others with similar names.
- I search the relevant available newspaper sources. Research remains focused on the person, family, event, and scope included in your selected package.
- You receive the findings electronically. The finished material includes useful articles or available copies/links when located, source information, an explanation of relevant genealogical findings, and recommended next steps where appropriate.
A particular obituary, article, or newspaper reference cannot be guaranteed to exist or be available.
