Description
Follow One Family Line Backward Through History
If you already know where your family tree begins but want to trace one branch farther into the past, Family Line Research provides a focused way to do it.
Rather than attempting to research every relative in a growing family tree, I concentrate on one defined direct ancestral line.
For example:
You → your father → his father → his father
or
You → your maternal grandmother → her mother → her mother
The objective is to identify and document each parent-child connection as far as the available evidence and purchased research scope reasonably allow.
Research may involve:
- census records
- birth and baptism records
- marriage records
- death records
- obituaries
- newspapers
- city directories
- cemetery records
- probate records
- church records
- immigration and naturalization records
- military records
- land records
- historical databases
- archival collections
- collateral relatives when necessary to establish the direct line
The goal is not merely to add names to a tree.
The goal is to determine which relationships are actually supported by evidence.
How Far Back Will the Research Go?
This service does not guarantee a specific number of generations.
One family line may move backward several generations quickly because good records survive.
Another may encounter a difficult parentage question after a single generation.
For that reason, packages are based on a defined research block rather than a promised number of ancestors.
I will continue working backward along the selected direct line while the available evidence reasonably supports doing so and while time remains within the purchased package.
What You Will Receive
Your completed project will normally include:
Direct-Line Framework
An organized generation-by-generation presentation of the researched ancestral line.
Relationship Findings
The evidence supporting each parent-child relationship identified during the project.
Key Biographical Information
Relevant names, dates, locations, marriages, residences, occupations, migrations, and other information discovered while establishing the line.
Source Documentation
Sources for significant findings and relationships.
Supporting Records
Copies, screenshots, excerpts, transcriptions, or links when legally permitted, available, and useful.
Evidence Analysis
Explanation of important identity issues, conflicting records, uncertain relationships, and evidence limitations.
Unresolved Questions
Any generation or relationship that could not be established adequately within the available evidence.
Recommended Next Steps
The most promising records, repositories, relatives, or research approaches for continuing the line.
What I Need From You
Please provide:
- The person where you want the ancestral line to begin.
- Full known name, including maiden or alternate names.
- Approximate birth and death dates.
- Known locations.
- Known parents, grandparents, spouse, children, and siblings where relevant.
- Which direct line you want followed.
- Existing family-tree information.
- Records, screenshots, certificates, obituaries, photographs, or previous research you already possess.
- Known conflicting information.
- Sources you have already researched.
- Any generation or relationship you particularly question.
What Counts as One Family Line?
One family line follows a single direct chain of ancestry.
For example:
John Smith → his father Robert Smith → Robert’s father William Smith → William’s father Thomas Smith
The research does not automatically expand into:
- every sibling
- every spouse’s ancestry
- every descendant
- every collateral relative
- multiple unrelated family branches
Collateral relatives may be researched when they materially help establish the direct ancestral relationship.
They do not automatically become separate research subjects.
What Happens if the Line Reaches a Brick Wall?
If a parent-child relationship cannot be adequately established, I will not simply guess and continue backward.
Instead, I will:
- explain what is established
- identify the disputed or missing relationship
- document the evidence located
- identify conflicting information
- use reasonable remaining research time to investigate the problem
- explain the strongest next steps
If the problem requires substantially deeper investigation, Genealogy Brick-Wall Investigation may be the appropriate continuation service.
What This Service Does Not Include
Family Line Research does not include:
- an unlimited family tree
- guaranteed discovery of a fixed number of generations
- every sibling or collateral relative
- complete research on spouses’ ancestral lines
- multiple separate family branches
- DNA analysis or genetic genealogy
- unknown biological-parent identification
- adoption investigations
- legal heirship conclusions
- citizenship-by-descent application preparation
- lineage-society certification
- tribal-membership or enrollment determinations
- living-person background investigations
- extensive international archival research
- professional foreign-language translation
- physical archive, courthouse, cemetery, or repository visits
- paid certified records
- archive or repository charges
- third-party researcher fees
- guaranteed discoveries
Existing Online Family Trees
Online family trees may provide useful clues, but they are not automatically treated as evidence.
A relationship repeated across many public trees can still originate from one incorrect or undocumented source.
Important relationships will be evaluated against available historical evidence whenever possible.
If a relationship cannot be supported adequately, it will be identified as uncertain rather than presented as established fact.
Outside Costs
The package price covers my research, analysis, source documentation, and report preparation.
Paid records, certified copies, archive charges, repository fees, database access purchased specifically for a project, and third-party researcher costs are not included.
No outside expense will be incurred without your approval.
Revisions
One clarification/revision is included.
A revision covers correction, clarification, organization, or reasonable adjustment of the delivered report within the original family line and research scope.
It does not include another ancestral line, additional generations beyond the purchased research block, a new research question, or additional research.
What Happens After You Order
- I will contact you by email. I will ask you to identify the starting ancestor and the direct family line you want traced, along with known names, dates, locations, relationships, records, tree information, and previous research.
- You provide the existing starting evidence. This helps establish the correct starting identity and prevents unnecessary repetition of work already completed.
- I research the direct ancestral line. The project follows one defined line and concentrates on documenting successive relationships within the evidence and research scope available in your selected package.
- You receive the findings electronically. Your report documents supported relationships, significant sources, evidence analysis, unresolved questions, and recommended next research steps.
The service does not guarantee that the line will reach a particular generation.
Research Focus
My strongest genealogy experience is with United States family-history research, with particular familiarity with western Pennsylvania families, communities, records, and migration patterns.
Refunds & Cancellations
Because this is a customized research or consulting service, cancellation and refund eligibility depends in part on whether substantive work has begun. Please review our Refund & Cancellation Policy before placing your order.
Research background: Approximately 17 years of family-history research experience, primarily personal extended-family and friends’ research before the recent expansion into paid client work.
